Immaginario

Simplifying Therapy Planning for Neurodiverse Communities
2024
Project Overview
Immaginario, an app supporting speech therapy for neurodivergent kids, underwent a strategic redesign to enhance remote and in-site therapy organization. Our process began by defining needs, goals, and opportunities through stakeholder meetings with therapists. These interactions defined our design goals: simplifying therapy agendas and enabling content-customization based on individual progress.
My Contributions
Analyze user needs, translating them into design possibilities. Revamp the old app version to produce new low and high-fidelity prototypes, and develop and finetune the system design to meet the developer and stakeholder constraints

We were tasked with creating a mobile application as an educational tool for therapists working with neurodiverse children. The Immaginario application aims to support children with autism in understanding and participating in everyday tasks and activities. Immaginario, originally developed by Finger Talks in 2013, addresses these needs but has encountered issues such as limited functionality, lack of cross-platform compatibility, and an outdated user interface. Our goal was to enhance this application to meet the needs of therapists and children alike.

To ensure our project aligned with the diverse needs of our stakeholders, including therapists, neurodiverse children, and their parents and caregivers, we conducted a thorough assessment of their requirements. Primary needs were identified, including an intuitive interface for weekly content customization in therapy sessions, assistance in developing communication skills using visual and auditory content, and ensuring privacy for sensitive user data. Our goals were to improve communication accessibility, engagement, and effectiveness, personalize communication strategies, and facilitate collaboration across diverse contexts. We also recognized constraints such as the need for accessibility, compatibility with diverse devices, seamless functionality in low or no internet environments, and stringent privacy measures. By understanding the context of temporal integration, organizational application, social utilization, and physical therapy sessions, we aimed to provide comprehensive support tailored to the unique needs of neurodiverse communities
Goals & Constraints of the Project
Stakeholder Requirements
User Needs & Goals
Interaction Paradigm: The app adopts an audiovisual interaction paradigm, integrating both visual and auditory elements. It features a card-based layout to establish visual hierarchy and organization, while incorporating audio cues to enhance user engagement. The design prioritizes accessibility, making the app especially suitable for neurodivergent children and ensuring an inclusive experience for a diverse user base

Remote Therapy Planning and Adjustments: The app facilitates remote therapy planning and adjustments, empowering therapists to track and modify therapy plans tailored to each child's specific needs and weekly goals. Caregivers benefit from instant access to therapist-made adjustments, with customizable content easily accessed and fully controlled by app administrators.
UX Design Solution
Efficient Home Structure & Shortcuts: Our homescreen prioritizes efficiency and seamless navigation, featuring shortcuts and contrast to highlight essential features. A central icon provides quick access to primary actions, such as creating new cards and folders, enhancing convenience during therapy sessions.

Agenda and Card Component: Our agenda feature simplifies viewing, focusing on card components and utilizing intuitive gestures like pinch, tap, and swipe. Accent colors and signifiers enhance interaction, while an inner menu streamlines task management for a user-friendly experience.

Customizable Word Library & Selection Mode: The word library offers quick access to cards, structured with a filtering system and recent items for efficient searching. Selection mode enables therapists to easily replace cards based on preferences, enhancing flexibility and customization during therapy sessions.
Design Concept
In the iterative process of refining Immaginario, stakeholder feedback led to several enhancements, including saving and restoring days in the agenda, drag-and-drop card rearrangement, and streamlined card creation processes. New options were integrated into the agenda feature, facilitating week-saving and clearing functionalities. Looking ahead, there's potential for further improvements, such as implementing a selection mode to enhance therapy workflows, introducing an offline mode for uninterrupted access, and establishing a user feedback loop for ongoing refinement.
