WheelTrip

Integrated Product Design | 2023
Project Overview
WheelTrip is an innovative app and integrated device designed to empower wheelchair users to navigate cities confidently. Combining a user-friendly touch interface with AI-powered mapping, WheelTrip identifies and circumvents common obstacles, ensuring smooth and safe journeys. Our community-driven platform compiles real-time city data, enabling users to plan trips with the most accessible routes. By transcending transportation barriers, WheelTrip aims to restore independence and offer an inclusive urban exploration experience for all users.
My Contributions
For the WheelTrip project, I primarily focused on developing the user interface for the mobile touchpoint. I began by researching the current state of navigation apps and accessibility features, ensuring that our design incorporated the best practices and latest innovations. Additionally, I conducted several semi-structured interviews with wheelchair users from diverse backgrounds to gain a deeper understanding of their daily challenges and gather insights we might have overlooked due to our limited firsthand experience.

Wheelchair users face daily obstacles when navigating urban landscapes, such as inaccessible pathways and limited information on city accessibility. These challenges often result in dependence on public transportation or others for travel. WheelTrip was created to address these issues, providing wheelchair users with a tool to navigate city streets with greater ease and confidence. Through careful design, we developed WheelTrip to be a reliable companion, ensuring that no terrain is unconquerable. The goal is to enhance independence and confidence in every city journey. Our need statement embodies this goal: "As a long-term wheelchair user, I want to have a safe, convenient, and engaging travel experience so that I can confidently embark on solo travel adventures."
Concept & Need Statement

"How might we redefine urban navigation to empower wheelchair users with seamless, AI-guided city exploration, erasing barriers and enhancing independence?"

Our Why: The Stories Behind

Our system integrates advanced technologies to provide a seamless and informed ride for wheelchair users. The touchpoints include a portable device and a mobile app, working together to enhance mobility. The compact device offers real-time guidance through visual cues, audio prompts, and haptic feedback, ensuring safe navigation. It also allows users to map the city based on their emotions and make quick emergency calls if needed. The mobile app complements this by offering custom route planning, real-time updates on accessible facilities, and an emotional map to capture and share user experiences. Together, these components create a comprehensive and user-friendly system designed to empower wheelchair users in their urban journeys.
